Yes, my dog is certainly taking over – unintentionally,of course – but still taking over. My mothering instincts kick in, and I start getting ridiculously picky about how slow she eats, (or fast), if she’s drinking enough water, if she’s too hot, etc. For crying out loud, she’s a —–dog!!! She won’t let herself starve, or die of thirst, I’m sure. Her survival instincts are way better than mine!  The funny thing is, my family has had, and still does have a dog, and I’ve been around animals most of my life – I’ve never been particularly worried that they might not eat their dinner. I think I’m genuinely going crazy. I need to get a life, I know…well, I’m trying, but unfortunately nothing’s worked out yet. God apparently knew that I would be waiting (for what and why I don’t know) and sent me my miracle dog Tundra for stress relief and to give me something to pet, pamper, and spoil. My husband has definitely appreciated the fact that I enjoy walking and exercising, now that I have a beautiful dog to do it with!  We’ve enjoyed many long hikes already this season, and have made good use of the nice bike path that runs through the city, both for walking, biking, and rollerblading. Tundra’s favorite (after hiking in the mountains) is rollerblading. It’s been a workout for me, but I love to see her happy and bouncy.

I have been in contact with Tundra’s original owner, and have found out more information about her! It was so exciting! I found out that she is actually 3/4 Akita, and 1/4 Siberian Husky. Her birthday is actually between January and March of 2009, so she is just 2 years old, instead of 2 1/2.  Her sire is a purebred Akita, her mom is 1/2 Akita, 1/2 Siberian Husky. She has the same grandmother on both sides. (her mother and father are half siblings)

As you can imagine, we’ve been super busy unpacking boxes, and trying to figure out where to put things, and how best to utilize our new space. It’s been so much fun to hang photos, pictures, and wall decorations up, and begin to make it a home.

We also made a life-changing decision to adopt a beautiful 2 and  1/2 year old Husky/Akita mix I named ‘Tundra” in honor of her snow dog breeds. (And perhaps a slight reference to a gorgeous Toyota Tundra pickup?)

We picked her up from the shelter yesterday, and she is adapting well to her new home. Having never lived indoors before coming home with us, she has a lot to get used to, and I have a feeling she will always be most happy outdoors hiking and being active with us. However, she is very mild mannered and quiet indoors – a huge bonus given the fact that she will be an apartment dog for a while.

In addition to setting boundaries and working with Tundra on household rules, and unpacking boxes and more boxes,  I have been doing a little job searching, and have sent my resume off to a high class country club golf course as well as to a private day care/kindergarten company. We will see if I hear anything back!

Etsy sales have been slow, but I honestly haven’t given it the time I should be lately – as we get more settled here, I will begin focusing more on that again.

I owe one more Etsy shop a feature on my blog! I will be posting this feature soon – keep an eye out for it!!!

How to Make Homemade Hand Lotion

1 1/4 cup hot water
1/4 cup emulsifying wax
1/4 cup olive oil
24-36 drops essential oil

I buy my emulsifying wax  & essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs. For $6 you get enough emulsifying wax to make, oh, about 15 or more batches of homemade hand lotion. In a pyrex measuring glass I combine the olive oil and emusifying wax and microwave for 1 minute until it is all melted. The temperature on this reads about 155 degrees.

I have found that our coffee mugs hold almost exactly 1 1/4 cup of water, so I fill is up and microwave that for 1 minute or until about 120 degrees. While that is heating up, I add the essential oil into my melted wax/olive oil mixture.

Then pour the hot water into the wax/olive oil mixture and watch it turn milky white. At this point the temperature is about 125 degrees. I then pour the hot lotion into wide mouth pint size jars and let cool overnight. The next morning you’ll have a fresh jar of homemade natural hand lotion!

It’s been warm here in Denver – I’m enjoying the tease of spring, and look forward to much more outdoor activity soon! I have a new mountain bike that I received as a gift last fall, and have never gotten to try it. I am hoping the weather holds this weekend so that I can give it a try!

Here are a couple of recipe ideas – if you are the experimental type, you might come up with your own special combination, too!

~~~~ Fill a large bowl or pan with cold or warm water to cover ankles.
Place stones or marbles in the bottom of the bowl. When you move your feet over the marbles they act as wonderful soothing and stimulating massagers.

Drop 2 – 3 drops of Essential Oil onto water, try these combinations:

Refreshing

• 3 drops tea tree, 3 drops lavender, 2 drops lemon

Relaxing

• 3 drops marjoram, 1 drop peppermint, 1 drop lavender

Immerse feet in water and soak! – Enjoy.

Variation:

A small cup (1/2 cup for a foot bath) of epsom salts can be mixed into the water to help with relaxing muscles, cleansing skin and increasing circulation.
